Op-ed: A High Court ruling in the UK in early November put the country's BRexit journey on hold.
It highlighted how shambolic BRexit, and the Tory government, overseeing the process is. On June 23 a majority of voters chose BRexit but in November "The high court decided the government does not have the power to trigger article 50 without consulting parliament" throwing a spanner in the works. Nothing much in real terms has happened on BRexit since June 23 but there has been a great deal of procrastination, pontification, a plummeting pound, inflation and other serious economic woes. The government appealed the High Court ruling and the Supreme Court will pass its verdict on December 7. The hearing was fast-tracked and 12 Royal appointed justices of the Supreme Court will decide on whether or not Parliament has to be allowed the final say on the triggering of Article 50. Farage's march and rally plans Nigel Farage, the interim leader of Ukip, made plans for the Supreme Court hearing. He was expected to lead a "100,000-strong march to the Supreme Court to coincide with the start of the Government’s attempt to stop peers and MPs delaying Brexit" reported the Telegraph. "The march, organised by the anti-European Union campaign Leave.EU, will end with a rally in Parliament Square within sight of the court building where judges will be hearing the appeal. The campaign group is planning to “crowd fund” £100,000 from its supporters to pay for barristers to represent Leave supporters in the court action." Farage was to be joined by members of Britain First, the BNP and the EDL and other far-right groups. But this time Nigel's plans have been thwarted. The march has been cancelled. One source told the mainstream media that the march never got past the planning stages. But there are also reports that Leave.EU. fearing the march would be highjacked by far right extremist groups pulled the plug. Counter demonstrations and marches were planned. http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/supreme-court-march-article-50-nigel-farage-bnp-edl_uk_5821bc2de4b0c2e24ab0ec1 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/11/06/nigel-farage-to-lead-100000-strong-march-on-supreme-court-on-day/ Opinion: The Labour Party had a massive injection of cash over the Summer.
People signed up as party members, some were then blocked, others suspended preventing them voting in the party's leadership election, later to be reinstated but with alleged offences remaining on file. What did Labour care as they laughed all the way to the bank? Well some in the Labour Party cared but it was not enough. Monday it was reported "Labour will kick plans to give thousands of new members more power in party structures into the long grass, amid concerns that the party needs to focus on the possibility of an imminent general election." Now why are my alarm bells ringing? As that report in the Guardian says the party now has the money to hire the necessary PR group thanks to we the members. "The party’s executive committee has decided to put plans for a so-called “democracy day” on hold in order to focus on election strategy. The move means that any concessions to MPs, such as shadow cabinet elections, which were demanded during the party’s annual conference in Liverpool, have also been shelved. Sources close to Jeremy Corbyn said plans to give Labour’s 500,000 members more representatives on the party’s national executive committee (NEC) would be stalled, despite the launch this week of a national campaign by Momentum urging the change." Ah those sources, always unnamed, that the right-wing media like to cite. It has taken nerves of steel and true grit to stay a Labour Party member in 2016. Long standing members may be used to divisive fun and games but the rest of us are not. But sadly the writing is on the wall again.
Fact - Tory Chancellor Philip Hammond will announce his autumn statement Wednesday. Fact - We need to be fighting the Tories and not each other. Fact - Plots within the Labour Party are damaging and could guarantee a Tory victory at the Polls. Why is Blair coming back to politics? With his flair for showmanship Tony Blair has released teasers on twitter saying he will be making an announcement in the New Year. News of a possible return will please some people but anger many more. July 2015 "Tony Blair says he wouldn’t want a left-wing Labour party to win an election." Well obviously. Blair and his pals Alastair Campbell and Peter Mandelson to name just two are as much a part of the establishment as David Cameron and George Osborne. For now it is watch, wait and see. The worse news the better and who cares if is fake or just supposition? Certainly the mainstream media in particular The Sun and the Mail who both ran with fake Jeremy Corbyn smear stories Sunday. The stories were later pulled but it was mission accomplished and the damage done. They did not care that their reports disrespected many as it was Remembrance Sunday. If those stories angered you contact IPSO and put in a formal complaint. But the traditionally supporting Labour publication the Daily Mirror went with supposition, fiction or fact with this story "David Miliband set to return to the UK after Trump victory- sparking rumours of Corbyn leadership challenge." Questions about whether or not David Miliband is a potential Labour Party leader are not new. In April we reported "asked about Corbyn, Keith Vaz talks up David Miliband." In the summer there were rumours David Miliband was set to return and be parachuted into the late Jo Cox's Batley and Spen seat. That was quickly dismissed as "he was doing quite well thank you very much in the USA." Was it simply mainstream media hyperbole? By September and days ahead of Jeremy Corbyn's re-election as party leader David Miliband was at it or again. This time it was David Miliband thinks Corbyn politics are undesirable but we asked for whom? November 12, 2016, days after Hillary Clinton lost the US Presidential Election, the Daily Mirror posted the "David Miliband set to return to the UK after Trump victory- sparking rumours of Corbyn leadership challenge" story. It may have a ring of truth, be supposition, fact-based or pure fiction but it is an attention grabbing headline, especially if you are a Labour Party supporter, voter and or member. Few people in that group want to endure more of the same, that is an internal election, following a wearing, divisive and destructive year but if the Daily Mirror is correct that is what we all face. So how do you fancy David Miliband as Labour Party leader as opposed to Jeremy Corbyn? Before you decide read this from that Mirror post:
Anonymous wishful thinking or stirring or fact-based? Well in case it is fact-based listen up David Miliband, Mr or Mrs Anonymous and the Daily Mirror.
But he is what he is or was. Perhaps now he has moved even further to the right after spending time in the USA? The American Democratic party is after all hardly what many of us in the UK would call left of centre politics or left leaning but rather occupiea the middle ground. The Labour Party, its supporters and its members deserve unity. If ultimately a right-wing gang within Labour are going to quit it is best they go sooner rather than later. Winning elections is getting trickier but win we must and more of the same old same old no longer wins elections. HOWEVER; The Daily Mirror September 12, 2015, http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/labour-mps-plotting-bring-back-6433486 Our Poll: When we launched this small independent website back in August we added a poll which is still running. We asked whether Jeremy Corbyn was electable and gave a few options. It was a little tongue in cheek but to date 78 votes have been cast. What they mean is any person's guess. How many voted honestly? How many came back and voted more than once? How many lied about their age? How many voted for a laugh or malevolently? Are all those who voted Labour Party supporters? Questions, questions yes so many questions. Yes just like mainstream media poll predictions this poll is what you want to make of it. It was created as some in the PLP were resigning at a fast and furious pace and a handful of MPS were showing themselves and the party up by sitting behind Mr Corbyn in the House of Commons chanting resign, resign, resign like a bunch of naughty bullying children, Obviously such shenanigans for all the world to see and read about caused an immense amount of damage to the Labour Party. But the majority of us have picked ourselves up, dusted ourselves down and moved on. Sadly some who should know better may still be plotting and drip feeding the right wing of the mainstream media spurious reports, anonymously of course as like all bullies they are not brave, but with new whips in place that has at least been curtailed for the most part. We must now focus on elections in particular building our credibility as a government in waiting. One cautionary note to the PLP. Having endured a horrendous summer Jeremy Corbyn supporters may not be so forgiving if a second plot is launched or ludicrous nastily timed purges of party members starts up again. Few will be happy if they canvas and campaign for the Labour Party in any way if they are let down again We are putting our trust in you now show you deserve it. The results of the poll to date follow but you can still vote if you want to here: The Poll Opinion: This is my opinion.
I am a Labour Party supporter and member. If it bothers you feel free to report me to the badly named Compliance Unit of the Labour Party. If you do it may or may not get me suspended. Then again it may be put on file for use at a later date. Throughout a crazy Summer Labour party members have been suspended. In some cases they were wrongly accused. In other cases their crime was name calling on a par with the schoolyard. In those cases the old sticks and stones came to mind. It is not nice calling someone a "fat sexist pig"; it is not nice being called a "fat sexist pig" either. But was that enough to suspend a Labour Party member? In this case it is an enthusiastic young man who has campaigned hard for Labour at local elections and for the UK to remain a member of the EU. With real-life struggles including a long and difficult search for work is it any wonder his temper frayed? But it seems that does not matter and neither does abuse by people in the upper echelons of the Labour Party. The political elite are not popular in the UK. They are doing a job and should be commended for that. They do receive a good salary though and plenty of perks. Some of them like to interact on social media, while others like to bait people and ruffle feathers. Often they target known Jeremy Corbyn supporters like the three in this post. You can make of that what you will. But social media is often anything but social and in the heat of the moment banter may become anything including abusive. This week at least three people I know via social media have had their suspensions lifted. But they have all been told a record will stay on file. Is that justice? Is that our free-thinking left-wing Labour Party? One suspension lifted today could not come soon enough. That party member was at breaking point and taking it all to heart. This resulted in myself tweeting to senior party officials that they could soon "have blood on their hands" and I was not being overly dramatic! Most Labour Party members do not believe this purge has been anything to do with real abuse. It may have been in part but it was just too conveniently timed as resigning members of the Parliamentary Labour Party plotted and did their damnedest to remove Jeremy Corbyn from the role of party leader. This week we posted that an "amnesty" of sorts was needed but that is not a one size fits all solution. Some of those suspended will not accept an action which leaves them allegedly guilty with a note on file for future use. For them the way forward will be the end game. Resigning from the Labour Party. Then at least they can save money by no longer paying into the party, they can campaign how they want and when they want as a free person. If they break the law they may face criminal charges but I doubt they will be treat in such an appalling way for using that phrase "fat sexist pig" on Facebook. Me? I would fall into the second category amd wave Labour goodbye. The image above was posted on Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn's Twitter timeline Tuesday evening but it may have escaped you. Unless you use Twitter and check out Jeremy Corbyn's timeline it is doubtful you saw the image. Professor Stephen Hawking did make headlines like this one in the Daily Mirror "Stephen Hawking's joke to Theresa May: 'I deal with tough questions but don't ask me about Brexit!'" but it was posted with images of the country's unelected Tory Prime Minister Ms Theresa May. Ms May awarded Prof. Hawking a lifetime achievment award Tuesday and the irony was not lost on some. May was part of David Cameron's government when it launched a full scale attack on some of the poorest and most vulnerable people of the UK. She took over when David Cameron turned tail and ran post BRexit but her government is still on the offensive when it comes to welfare, benefits, the poor and people with disabilities. According to the Daily Mirror, the award show hosts "after receiving a Lifetime Achievement award, Professor Hawking joked: "I deal with tough, mathematical, complex questions every day but please don't ask me to help with Brexit ." Viewers were quick to react, with one saying: "What a legend!"." This blogger did not tune in. It may be the viewing highlight of the year for some but not me. Kudos to all the worthy winners and their heartwarming and inspirational stories and kudos to all those who face similar challenges but are never recognised. The Daily Mirror Pride of Britain awards is something of a PR stunt; little wonder then that mainstream media has run with Prof. Hawking and Theresa May who for once was in a posh frock. But the image of Corbyn and Hawking is well worth sharing. In April 2015 ahead of the General Election wise man Stephen Hawking told the Labour List he was voting for the Labour Party. Dear all
It is time to talk about the elephant in the room - Labour Party suspensions. Around 8,000 people according to some. There may be many reasons some members are still suspended from the Labour Party, stuck in limbo, but a lack of useful, pertinent information to those affected is just one cruel aspect of this sorry state of affairs. Legal concerns and matters may be part of the problem but we members are just ordinary folk. We are not in it for the money, the power and the glory. We have our own life stresses and strains. When we opt to commit to a political party we deserve some respect. People join for many reasons and yes some do so mischievously. But the majority join the party to show support and pay for the privilege. In some cases they work their socks off trying to get the Labour Party message out and representatives elected. If they then respond angrily on social media using a word that the party machine has suddenly decided is off limits, such as TRAITOR, do they deserve suspension? When the party has trawled back over time following anonymous complaints regarding party members the affected member is scuppered. But as previously stated if you feel a person has betrayed you or broken a promise TRAITOR is a very fitting word. Those MPs who vowed to support Mr Corbyn when he was elected September 12, 2015, but did anything but, fit that category to perfection. But as #LabourPartyPurge2 drags on tempers are fraying and people are resigning - enough is enough and who can blame them for quitting. A sensible way forward would be an amnesty of sorts. The abuse timer reset, as after all in many cases it was simply angry debate and not abuse. That would allow a date to work from. No more trawling back over social media just a clean slate and new era following your re-election in 2016. Allowing the current situation to drag on is destructive. It means people listen to Chinese whispers and gossip. That results in more anger and the downward spiral circle continues to whirl out of control. It is not rocket science. It makes some conclude the party is still split, that a further leadership challenge could follow and it provides the mainstream media with ammunition all making Labour's electability a distant dream. For the sake of us all we need to hit the restart button. With so many factions working against each other little wonder people are 'speaking with their feet' and resigning. Who will respond to this open letter? Will anything change for the better in 2016? Or is the Labour Party just too big for its boots now. Party suspensions need putting to bed. Time to move on and work toward election success with all hands to the pumps. Note: The writer is not suspended. But she has Labour values which means she cares about those that are. Do you Mr McNicol?
